Personality:

On the surface, Gladio appears to be to be your typical muscle-head thug. He's tall and imposing, tattoos all over his body and facial scars to really tie the whole look together. That's only as far as first impressions go, however, as anyone who spends five minutes having a conversation with him will learn that there's more to him than meets the eye. Gladio is thoughtful and observant to those around him, and can sometimes offer insight and wisdom that can surprise even his closest friends.

Gladio carries himself with lots of confidence - he speaks his mind and backs it up with conviction. This trait is necessary for someone of his duty, who has trained all his life to become the king's shield. He takes his role extremely seriously, to the point that he takes offense whenever he thinks Prince Noctis isn't doing the same. He always expects the absolute best from his charge, which can sometimes cause friction and frustration between him and Noctis. However, even when it seems like Noctis is faltering and close to failing his duty, Gladio never gives up on the young prince. Instead, he pushes him onwards, even if he has to speak out of line and call him a coward, it's always done with the hopes that Noctis will prove him wrong. Interestingly enough, while Gladio doesn't hold back against his enemies, one of the scars on his face was earned when he protected Noctis from a drunken stranger in the capital city. Gladio could have easily fought back against the assailant, but admits that he would rather take the hit than harm a crown citizen. This goes to show that while Gladio's priority will always be the prince and his friends, his duty as a protector can also extend to anyone from the capital.

While Gladio shows how confident he is at any given chance, that's not to say that he doesn't possess some insecurities, too. By his own admission, it's revealed that he actually fears not being strong enough to carry out his duty, something that became even more clear when Ravus bested Gladio in a fight, and would have killed the future king that Gladio is supposed to protect if he wasn't ordered to back down. While everyone else moves on from this narrow victory, it continues to fester in Gladio's mind until he decides to take on a dangerous trial with the promise of gaining a new power if he succeeds. Despite warnings that it may cost him his life, Gladio pushes through the trial and emerges not only stronger, but with a newfound confidence in himself to protect his prince and future king.

Fighting prowess aside, Gladio also displays a surprising amount of academic and social knowledge. Among his group of four, he's known as the one who's "good with people", according to Prompto. He knows how to speak and connect with everyone on an impressive level. In one of the game's festival events, Gladio and Ignis break away from the party to do their own thing, and the player can find Gladio engaging with a bunch of strangers within minutes of leaving. In the game's future events, after a ten-year timeskip, Gladio even mentions having a girlfriend despite them living in a near apocalyptic world by that point. At some point in the game, Gladio even recognizes a published biology author, and is seen several times reading from a book during long car rides or nights at the motel. All of this suggests how easily he operates on a social level, and while he's not the smartest one in the group (that goes to Ignis!), he's definitely more than just a shield and eye candy.

Gladio's protective nature not only comes from his lineage and profession, but also from the fact that he's a big brother. Growing up with his younger sister Iris, it sometimes fell on him to be her parent while their father kept busy with his own royal duty. As a de facto parent sometimes, but more importantly, a big brother, Gladio wasn't quite the best at it, but he does care about his sister deeply and doesn't try to hide that fact. As Iris grows older and more responsible, Gladio trusts her enough to let her come into battle with them, knowing she's sensible enough to stay out of danger, but he still prefers it if she stayed somewhere safe altogether.

While Gladio is certainly disciplined, coming from a military background, he's not above just messing around with his friends, whether it's in the form of teasing or even sometimes playing videogames. When the mood feels right, he easily slips into a more lighthearted role, displaying enthusiasm for mundane things, such as posing in Prompto's photos, going fishing with Noctis or offering to taste Ignis' newest recipes. As mentioned earlier, he's popular with women when they stop by the city, and while there's no evidence to suggest his popularity and cheery attitude leads to anything further than flirting, it just goes to show that Gladio's policy is to always leave strangers better than how he found them.


Abilities:
Gladio has a selection of greatswords and shields he can summon at will when it's time to fight. Other than that, he has raw natural strength, which when combined with his Glaive Art, he can create small whirlwinds by spinning his greatsword, or a shockwave if he hits the ground with it.


Alignment: Sosyne - Gladio embodies both sides of the spectrum. In most situations, he acts as the calm voice of reason, especially in moments when Noctis lacks focus and clarity. However, Gladio can just as easily lose his temper when pushed too far, which can sometimes make him lash out at his friends, too.
